Don’t ignore the environment warning signs
Hydropower & Water Resources
Water is a fundamental source of energy. Throughout the world, our engineering services provide the key to sustainable hydropower utilization, development of water and land resources and reliable and environmentally compatible flood protection. Water is life: no water means no growth, no harvests, no development.
Client services range from concept formulation through to project implementation and beyond. Our strengths lie in preparing studies and plans for investment decisions as well as in providing numerous services during project construction and commissioning phases. Our engineering services provide the key to the environmentally sustainable use of water resources.

Our services include investigating, planning and designing hydropower and multi-purpose schemes as the basis for investment decisions. We develop and optimize power system expansion plans and advise during the decision-making process through to project implementation.
We are also responsible for the tender and construction design for all types of hydraulic structures, including the planning and performance of engineering design, not only traditionally for Employers, but also for suppliers and contractors within the framework of turnkey and EPC contracts.
Our services cover the entire process of preparing and executing works and facilities for construction and operation. The responsibilities related to contracts management include establishing the contractual and financial basis for the project, developing all tender and contract documentation for a variety of types of project (conventional construction, design-build and EPC, operation and maintenance, private concession), managing the prequalification and tendering processes, contractual negotiations and award, and the complete management of all contractual issues during the lifetime of the implementation contract. For the technical supervision of construction and erection, our engineers and other specialists apply their long experience to ensure that the works are completed correctly, and wherever possible within the prescribed time with cost constraints, and all staff pursue rigorously the maintenance of quality throughout the project process.
Geological and geotechnical challenges are often very demanding when planning hydraulic structures. Hydropower, water supply and irrigation projects require detailed geotechnical investigations before the start of the actual design works. During planning and execution of the works continuous input by geological and geotechnical specialists is essential.
Geomatics play a major role in hydropower, land and water resources development as well as other infrastructure projects. Our worldwide projects require a wide range of approaches to the integration of different types of spatial information. To meet these needs experts with various qualifications, offer expertise in engineering surveying, geodesy, geographical information systems, remote sensing, land administration and cadaster.
The planning and development of projects in the water sector require comprehensive information ideally based on reliable observation networks. We analyze meteorological and hydrological data and apply statistical methods and simulation models to derive streamflow hydrographs and flood discharges required for the design of dams and hydropower plants. Hydrographs include not only the assessment of the preceding data, but also the impact of future climate change on the particular project.
For construction management, we determine the most efficient river diversion scheme and model and supervise the reservoir impoundment process. We simulate and optimize reservoir operation for isolated reservoirs or integrated reservoirs systems, considering multiple objectives such as hydropower generation, irrigation demands, ecological needs, flood protection and sediment management.
Inflow forecast as well as advising and updating of operation rules complement our services covering the full range from initial studies to commercial operation.
Through our highly experienced partners with their specialist Engineers, we provide training and support for the permanent operation and maintenance staff of hydropower and water control facilities, including general and specific operation activities, inspection and surveillance of the facilities, maintenance and repair programs and procedures, as well as the development of reservoir operating rules for the optimum use of water resources, and the design of instrumentation systems and monitoring programs.
We perform the planning, design and contracting for the manufacture and erection of hydromechanical, mechanical and electrical equipment in hydropower plants and other hydraulic structures, as well as the supervision of the entire process including factory acceptance tests, handling and erection on site, testing, quality control and commissioning. In addition to new projects we have extensive experience in the rehabilitation of existing plants.
The advantages of hydropower
Hydropower makes use of a resource with reserves that are continually replenished: water. Since it is dispatchable on demand, hydropower is the only renewable that can support the development of intermittent resources such as wind and solar power.
By utilizing a clean, renewable resource, We ensure that it can meet the energy needs of present and future generations while preserving the environment. Water flowing through the turbines of a hydroelectric generating station does not suffer any deterioration and is returned, in its entirety, to the river.
Not only is hydropower a constant, permanently available energy source, it’s also flexible. Thanks to its storage capacity, a reservoir generating station can respond instantly to changes in demand. At peak periods, hydropower generation can be adjusted almost in real time. In comparison, it can take approximately 12 hours to start up a coal-fired power plant.
Dispatchable, regular and predictable, hydropower is the only renewable that can support the development of intermittent resources such as solar and wind power
Hydropower is a secure and reliable energy source because of the flexibility and quality of the province’s generation, transmission and distribution facilities. In addition, sustained innovation efforts ensure that the Québec power system is continually improved.
Because Hydro-Québec’s power comes from a large generating fleet, supply is not affected by maintenance or equipment failure at any particular facility.
The engineering and construction quality of our associates generating fleet has been a model for the industry for years. The company makes substantial investments to maintain and upgrade its facilities. Our partners are recognized worldwide for the reliability and robustness of its transmission system, we take every possible measure to remain a benchmark in this regard.
We competitively priced when compared with other electricity generating options, including other clean sources of energy and natural gas.
Hydropower development entails high up-front capital, but very low operating costs, which translates into power at a very stable, predictable cost for the long term. Some of Hydropower facilities have been operating for over 100 years. It is reliable and competitively priced.
Hydropower is one of the lowest-emission generating options per kilowatt-hour. Based on life cycle analysis, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from hydropower generated are:
- Similar to wind energy
- 5 times less than solar photovoltaic
- 50 times less than natural gas
- 70 times less than coal
Among renewable and low-emission energy sources, hydropower is the only one offering continuous generation; all the others are intermittent.
